Area FFA Member Trot to State Fair Horse Show

Mikayla Pfab of Granger was named High Point Exhibitor in the FFA Horse Show held Wednesday and Thursday as part of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Pfab competed with 129 exhibitors from 62 FFA chapters who showed a total of 175 animals. Unique Clothing Creations show talent of Vinton women

Lisa Criss-Dickerson of Centerville earned Best of Show honors in the Fabric and Threads Clothing Construction competition judged prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Amanda Martin to Attend Creighton University in the Fall

Amanda Martin of Atkins, Iowa, will be attending Creighton University along with almost 1,000 other freshmen this fall. Martin, a graduate of Benton Community High School, who will be entering into the College of Arts & Sciences, will be part of a freshman class that is academically strong, diverse and engaged in community and service activities.

AmeriCorps NCCC Welcomes New Staff Member

By: Rachel Lebeaux   Heather Peck is a native Iowan who currently resides in North Liberty. Heather enlisted in the United States Navy right out of high school and spent six years serving, two on active duty and four in the naval reserves. Her two years on active duty were spent as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard in Washington DC.

NCCC Assists Lutheran Disaster Response

By Emma Mills   AmeriCorps NCCC’s Oak 2 worked with the Lutheran Disaster Response in Minot, N.D. They were helping to restore homes that were effected in the Mouse River flooding last summer. Minot has had NCCC teams present since the flood happened in June of 2011. Many of the homes in the area had been mucked and gutted before the arrival of Oak 2.

Mark Robertshaw‏ By: Rachel Lebeaux   Name: Mark Robertshaw   Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri   Mark is serving as the Pine 6 NCCC Team Leader at the Vinton Campus. He chose to serve because it will be a once in a lifetime experience that adds a very unique attribute to his medical school applications.   Mark graduated from DeSmet Jesuit High School in May 2007 and the University of Notre Dame in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Science.

Heavy Weight Barrow Champion: Chelsea Schminke, Van Horne at State Fair

  Jake Keppy of Durant captured the Grand Champion Market in the FFA Market Swine Show judged Thursday and Friday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Keppy's hog first won the Champion Purebred Market Pig banner on the drive to the championship. Earning the Reserve Grand Champion title this year was Chelsea Schminke of Van Horne. Alexis Delaney of DeWitt claimed the Reserve Champion Purebred Market Swine award.
